6 Simple Ways to Honor a Veteran This Memorial Day

Memorial Day is more than just the start of summer. Although it’s usually BBQs, pool parties, fireworks etc, it is a time to pause, reflect, and honor the brave men and women who served our country. For a lot of families, this holiday carries some heavy heart as they remember loved ones, veterans, and military members who made incredible sacrifices.

They also love to honor them but sometimes we don’t know how. Memorial Day does not have to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes the simplest gestures are the ones that matter most.

Whether you are honoring a family member, supporting veterans in your community, or teaching younger generations about the importance of remembrance, here are a few thoughtful ways to honor a veteran this Memorial Day.

  1. Visit a Memorial or Cemetery

One of the most meaningful ways to honor veterans on Memorial Day is by visiting a local memorial, veterans cemetery, or historical site. Bringing flowers, standing quietly in reflection, or simply taking time to acknowledge those who served can be a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedoms.

2. Put out the American flag

Many families honor Memorial Day by displaying the American flag outside their homes or in their gardens. Even adding patriotic flowers, flags, or red, white, and blue garden touches can create a peaceful outdoor space dedicated to remembrance and gratitude.

3. Support Veteran Owned Businesses

Shopping small and supporting veteran owned businesses is another thoughtful way to show appreciation. Whether it is a local coffee shop, small business, farm, or handmade brand, your support helps honor veterans beyond just one day a year.

4. Spend Time with a Veteran

Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can offer is your time. If you know a veteran, consider visiting them, sharing a meal, listening to their stories, or simply checking in. Many veterans appreciate feeling seen, heard, and remembered. You can even find one you don’t know and spend time with them. There are also veterans who don’t have anyone so they would love that.

5. Participate in a Local Memorial Day Event

Many communities host parades, ceremonies, charity walks, and remembrance events throughout Memorial Day weekend. Going to a local event is a meaningful way to support veterans, honor military families, and come together as a community. Usually they also even have veteran owned vendors to be able to support them,

6. Say Thank You

Sometimes honoring veterans starts with a simple act of gratitude. Taking a moment to thank a veteran, acknowledge a military family, or express appreciation for their service can make a lasting impact. You can also honor remembrance in thoughtful ways at home, like planting flowers in their memory or creating a peaceful outdoor space for reflection. At Gloria’s Garden, our Memorial Day seed packets were created as a meaningful way to honor service, sacrifice, and remembrance through nature.

Kindness and remembrance do not have to be grand gestures to matter.

Memorial Day is ultimately about remembering the people behind the uniforms the families, sacrifices, stories, and lives that helped shape our communities and country. That gave the ultimate sacrifice so we could have our freedom. Whether you spend the day with loved ones, outdoors, attending a local event, or quietly reflecting, we hope you find meaningful ways to honor and remember those who served.
